The “Varia” Module on Say It Right 5.0 Online Platform has been created as a space for offering various kinds of additional materials that users may find useful in their pursuit of mastering English. The materials will be added systematically and will cover a wide range of topics and domains of English learning.
Unlike Sounds, Prosody, Grammar, and Vocabulary, the Varia Module is not sold as a whole, but only as separate chapters.
We begin by offering a very useful resource on the immensely complicated nature of spelling of English sounds. Here, the user will find several thousand words grouped by the sound and further subgrouped according to the spelling of that sound.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light and popularized a whole range of words which either did not exist (e.g. covidiot) or were used only within the domain of medicine. COVID-19 Vocabulary contains the words associated with the pandemic, their definitions and examples of usage.
"The Chaos", also known as "Dearest creature in creation", is a poem showing irregularities of English spelling system, written by Gerard Nolst Trenité (1870-1946), a Dutch traveler, writer, teacher and great fan of English. It is said that over 90% of native speakers of English are unable to read the poem correctly, and even the 10% may need to check an occasional word in the dictionary.
